Mentoring - Formal One on One
Background
A large multidisciplinary organisation in the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector had recently developed and implemented an extensive OHS management system.
The organisation had allocated a System owner who had varying OHS responsibilities across a number of countries within the region. Recognising a limited resource capacity to meet implementation requirements, the organisation appointed a new OHS System Manager internally.
Problem
The client recognised that the OHS System Manager did not have the depth and breadth of experience to manage the implementation and review of the OHS management system at a national level as a result of the newly created position and the incumbent's previous exposure to OHS management system implementation.
Solution
Our solution was to provide a structured and programmed mentoring interaction based on formal one-on-one activities.
We used our extensive knowledge and experience in planning, preparation and programming OHS management system implementation requirements to provide a framework to enable the development of the position holder to meet organisational requirements.
We also evaluated specific organisational needs for inclusion within mentoring subject areas to ensure that subject delivery was tailored to the organisation and its business activities.
The mentoring approach maintained a partnering arrangement which ensured that ownership of mentoring outcomes was retained by the position holder.
Result
Our managed and considered approach to delivering one-on-one mentoring applicable to the activities of the organisation allowed the incumbent to more readily understand the application of OHS management system requirements within the business context and provided the incumbent with the tools to effectively manage program implementation and review.
