Workers Compensation
Workers Compensation and Injury Management Professionals. A Balancing Act
Typically the professionals who manage workers compensation or injury management for an organisation come from varying backgrounds such as;
- An insurance background
- An allied health background
- A human resources background
While such training and experience can be effective in particular aspects of an employer’s Workers Compensation and Injury Management Program, it is a rare person indeed who has the skills to be an expert in both claims administration and return to work strategies.
The job of administering the workers compensation function and the return to work function is often divided between two people or two units. This can result in complex and sometimes counterproductive situations.
Operating an effective workers compensation and injury management function relies on claims management personnel understanding and valuing the injury management function and the return to work coordinator understanding and valuing the claims administration compliance requirements. These two things need to work together in a consistent and integrated way, and must comply with applicable laws.
The role of the workers compensation/injury management professional is to develop and implement comprehensive, fully statutory-compliant activities which ensure the effective and timely management of the claim and the safe and speedy return to work of the injured employee.
Achieving such an outcome in all instances can be difficult and is influenced by the relationship these personnel have with their workers compensation insurer, the operational managers in their organisation and the injured employees. These are very complex, and sometimes legally very difficult, situations.
